Wall-E

July 19, 2008

I took the kids to the movies this afternoon. Camille's first movie experience and she did great. And most surprising of all: I really enjoyed the movie. I am not a science fiction person and not really an animated film person either, but the kids earned a movie day on their sticker chart and Noah really wanted to see it since it involved robots. So much rolled up into one little film...romance, drama, adventure. Very little dialogue and yet so much to discuss....man vs. machine, taking care of the earth, the impact of excess, love in strange places, survival (one very impressive roach in the film), connection, music, collecting, recycling, re-building, destruction and renewal. I kept wanting to lean over and have a philosophical discussion with my children...but they were glued to the screen. Afterwards I left the theatre bursting to talk about the film. Noah thought it was an "ok" movie with some parts that were "too scary". Camille said she liked the "robots on big tv". But I can't stop thinking about it and now I need to find other adults who have seen it. Nice to be surprised by a movie. Seems like these days my limited movie outings are way too expensive and too predictable and/or disappointing, but Wall-E was pleasantly different.

Let's hear it for Pixar--their movies rock! I haven't had a chance to see it. I'm sure I'll just wait and buy it on DVD at Christmas time. ;) I'm sure I would love to discuss it though.

We saw it, and I'll say that those were some of the *only* reasons I cared for it- the discussions it could bring up. As far as entertainment value, I prefer Nemo and Cars. BUT, I am the sort that loves movies with TONS of dialogue content (I think that's why I loved the TV show GIlmore Girls which was extremely well known for being jam-packed with "talk"). Anyway, after seeing it (Wall-E), I kind of had the urge to write up a teacher's guide or something. Maybe when it comes out on DVD? so we can re-watch it and take notes.

I LOVED THIS MOVIE. For the reasons you mentioned - especially the idea of how amazing "life" is and how much we take take living things for granted :)

Plus, I am a huge Hello Dolly fan :)

We took Nathan to it last week, the first movie he ever went to (Kung Fu Panda) he fell asleep 20 minutes into it so Id say WALL-E was really his first movie experience. I actually think the lack of dialog made it harder for him to understand what was going on. I did think it had a lot of good messages and Im sure we'll probably end up owning it but I don't think it was my favorite Pixar movie. There were a lot of really cute, entertaining scenes though.

Richard, Sheridan and I talked a lot about this movie. My resolution for this year was to work on reducing our waste as a family and to recycle everything that we can. WALL-E was right up my alley. The movie brought up some great topics on what more we can do as a family to help.

my husband took the kids to this and I stayed home with the baby. I'm wishing it was the other way around though! hopefully we'll see it again before the summer is out.

Hmmm... I wasn't overly impressed by the trailer, but I have been pleasantly surprised by Pixar in the past. Sounds like we should check this one out.
