Real Van

June 17, 2009

Another reality post. Our beach bag may be pretty organized, but most of our daily life is not...especially our van. A shot of what the van normally looks like and a shot of what it looked like last week after it was detailed and being prepared to ship to Sicily. I joked a few months ago with a friend about organizing a "real" tour of homes. This came up during a visit to her house when I felt so comforted to see dirty clothes on the floor, orange peels left behind by little hands, and other evidence of every day living. Our real life is usually pretty messy, but every now and then it is good to have a reason to give it a serious cleaning. Moving around the world seems like a good reason, but I am sure it won't take long to feel "real" again.

This is funny and comforting (my car is a PIT) and timely too. My editor at a magazine I write for asked me for photos of the boat. I told him I should take "reality check" photos rather than pretty perfect boat photos. So he agreed and I sent both. We'll see which ones hit print in the September issue of SAIL!

Living on a boat might be a good thing for me because it would really force me to limit my packratting. Must be exciting to see your work in print...I hope both the perfect and the real shots get included in the article.

Wow. You must be headed to Sicily soon if your car is alreday being shipped. I can't wait to read about your adventures and I hope to see Bina on your blog. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about Sicily. Especially if you get to live off base. I lived in Acireale and Motta.

I appreciate your honesty. My car looks just like that, maybe worse! My husband HATES it (though not enough to manage it better.) I have to clean it out this evening bc we are packing for a trip -- maybe I'll do a before and after shot like you have here. Keeping it real!

You know another funny aside your photos made me think of... when I was young and single, I would ride along with my camera men to shoot locations for work. And they had little kids and their cars would be pits too. I would wrinkle my nose and think, "MY car will NEVER look like THIS!"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Mine is 10 times worse.
Best to you on your adventures!

Funny that you would post this now-- I just reached my limit of the level of disaster that I could tolerate in our van. Since I don't drive, I look at the van as my hubby's territory, but there is that little fact that my hubby can be quite a slob, so I spent a couple of hours on Sunday cleaning out the van, washing windows, wiping surfaces, collecting trash, and vacuuming every inch of the darn thing. YUCK. But now, I cacn tolerate riding in it again! :)
