Green Beans

September 16, 2008

Yesterday while checking out at the grocery store, the cashier carefully studied the bag of produce and then pulled out a chart with photos of fruits and veggies. She then looked up at a me with a puzzled look and asked "what are these?". And sadly she actually seemed surprised to learn that they were green beans. Really, how sad is that? I could understand the need to consult the chart if I had a bag of exotic fruit, but green beans? Note to self: increase the range of our vegetable consumption. We seem to be in a rut regarding veggies and food in general. I just don't feel as adventurous or driven to try out new recipes lately, but hopefully that will change soon.

I once read a little snippet in a magazine (probably Reader's Digest). A woman at the checkout line at a grocery store had put the divider-stick-thingy between her food and the food of the person in front of her. When the cashier saw it, she picked it up, studied it carefully, then told the woman that she couldn't find the price for it. The woman was so flabbergasted that the cashier didn't know what it was that she simply told the cashier she had changed her mind and didn't want to buy it after all.

wow, that is sad. maybe she was new and having brain overload?? or not.

I've been reading "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver and it is VERY inspiring about eating more vegetables. and local eating to boot. I'm reading the part about cheese making right now. So cool!

I had a similar incident with cabbage before. I was shocked too. I chalked it up to the cashier being young and being raised on Hamburgers and French Fries.

My first date with DH, we went to the farmer's market and got fresh veggies (even shelled peas) and made us a homemade veggie meal. (We were quite tired of the single eating out thing) I knew he was a keeper.

My kids know what many veggies and fruits are. It's just trying to get them to eat them that poses the problem.

sometimes i read your blog and you have all these thoughtful things to say. i can't even hear what the checkout lady is saying to me because of the thoughts running through my head of what errand is next or, watching carefully which bag the granola bars are going into because i'll have to get those out in 3 minutes...i just smile and nod and assume it's a comment on my kids. my blog is so about nothing. i love you guys and your blog and your thoughts.
