Two Euros of Bliss

December 21, 2009

To add to the joy of yesterday's sledding adventure on Etna: our first taste of Italian hot chocolate. Chocolate bliss. Crack in a cup. Pure decadence. I could go on and on. It is so good I think Italy could woo tourists in the winter on this alone. A whole ad campaign based on one cup of cioccolata caldo. Forget the churches, the history, the culture. Drink this. So thick you need a spoon (almost pudding-like), so rich, so chocolatey (that should be a word, shouldn't it?). Makes me angry that I grew up drinking that watery Swiss Miss stuff and thinking that was a good winter treat. This stuff is so darn good that when we went out to eat last night I had to, yes, had to have another cup. And I woke up this morning thinking about it. Craving it. Dangerous. Very dangerous stuff here in Italy. Want to try making it yourself? Here you go.

Could not have described it better myself! To be truly decadent. . .add a little panna on top :) I think that the best is in Tuscany, but, you are so right, Swiss Miss is a fraud!

I've never had it like that but "chocolatey" is just the right word to hook me! Dangerous, indeed! I'll let you know when I finally get around to making it. I'll resist for now, because I'm afraid that once I do, it will be a daily affair. ;-)

You mean, mean lady. Teasing people like that. Especially without thinking there might be hard core chocoholics in your readership.
It reminds me of cococ we had in Cuba. Yes, pure nirvana.

OMG!!! That looks like the chocolate that comes with the churros in Spain.
BTW... a pure TORTURE Photo on a brisk upper 30s degree morning here in FL

They have it here too and I totally agree!!! Had a cup myself today while christmas shopping- it is heavenly! So dark and not too sweet.

Sorry for the torture! Had another cup today and the obsession continues...so bad and yet so very good.

I am drooling. I told you you'd eat well. ;-) Gelato when it's hot, and hot chocolate, well, whenever!

ooo, I didn't know hot chocolate was a special thing in Italy! It looks absolutely magnificent. Discovering treasures like this is one of the greatest joys of living abroad. yum. yum. yum.

Oh my, oh my... this sounds like heaven. This post alone bumped Italy WAY up on my hope-to-visit-someday list. :)

totally agree, and very well said! People don't believe me when I describe Italian hot chocolate - and it's not like drinking a cup of chocolate fondue either is it. It's one of the things I look forward to in winter!!
