Etna Eruption

January 13, 2011

Last night we had quite a show in our backyard! Sometimes, it is easy to forget that the beautiful mountain, really is an active volcano. It is actually the most active volcano in all of Europe and last night it erupted. A neighbor banged on our door and we ran outside to join the rest of our neighborhood watching the fiery display. One of our neighbors pulled out his telescope so we were able to see the action even more closely. As the night wore on the show got even more dramatic. We were all asleep when another neighbor took these photos at about 1 am. Makes me very glad we live in the valley and are able to enjoy the Etna's fireworks without the anxiety that would come from living closer to the top.  Want to see more? Check out this video clip and this update

oooooh!!!!! very cool! rowan will be very impressed from afar. i'm pretty sure that would have terrified him up close. he loves volcanoes, but worries, even when we are near ones that have been dormant for years.

Oh my gosh! Glad you are in a safe location. Now you can see it as a wonder instead of a danger!

Wow!! Beautiful photos, but a little unnerving I imagine!! I think I will be showing these photos to my class tomorrow as I am covering a topic of volcanoes and we have been discussing the activity in the region.

Oh, WOW! Absolutely amazing! **Awesome** photos. (You need to be posting on flickr some more, chica!!)

I had to share a funny...my sis-in-law took her dad to Costa Rica a couple of years ago as a treat for him. One afternoon she told him she was pretty sure the nearby volcano was erupting (I guess you could see spewing ash). He told her v. officiously no, no, but that night they could clearly see the red lava glowing as it poured out.

I think I mentioned to you before that we could see a small eruption from our home in Guatemala. The volano we would climb all the time, Pacaya, erupted just last May. It's hard to wrap my mind around that I walked in that caldera years ago, with the bottoms of my shoes nearly melting in the heat.

Incredible! I think that Mt. Etna was a clue in a crossword I did last week... I didn't imagine that it would be erupting only days later. I'm glad that you all are safe!

My son will LOVE this. He is a volcano fanatic. He goes to Guatemala to hike the volcanoes there and he's only 10.
