Real Find

May 26, 2010

Yes, that is a big, glass bottle buckled into the seat next to Camille. She wasn't happy about it. Noah didn't even lift his head to see what was happening. He has become blase and accustomed to my dumpster diving ways. Adam is standing at the back of the van smiling and shaking his head. He knows I won't be changing any time soon and he has learned that there really are some treasures sitting on the sides of roads (like those chairs we use all the time, that Japanese lamp, those bookshelves, and too many other things to name). I look at this picture and realize once again that I am truly turning into my mother.

I know it wasn't the safest way to transport that green hunk of glass, but we were close to home and the back of the van was just too full of beach stuff...consider this just another "real" view of our van and of our crazy, little life. Happy to report we all made it home safely and the bottle is now sitting pretty next to our front door (we removed that plastic woven cover). I will try to post an after pic soon, but in the meantime read this.

You found that in the DUMPSTER? Ahhh, only in Italy. What a find! I can see why you wanted to drag it home, how cool!

We inherited a cellar full of those in various sizes! I have used some as a feature with lights underneath them, I will try and post a photo, blog of them sometime soon. I look forward to seeing what you decide to do with yours.

All that we have, about a dozen have come from dumpsters. I drag them out to the terrace and put candles in them. I cut the top of a plastic water bottle, fill with a little sand, add the tea light and then stick the neck of the plastic bottle in the glass bottle. Works well. Keep watching that dumpster more might appear.

My mother is a believer of the one mans trash is another mans treasure theory. I had a friend who was a missionary in Japan and he said the trash their was amazing because you could find perfectly good stuff in the trash and expensive stuff because their the people love to have new. I don't know if this is still the case. You wouldn't find anything good in my trash.

That is a funny article. Awesome that you buckled it. We always looked around on dumpster day in Maryland. You could always get something. In Utah, everyone wants to sell everything for more than it's worth. So no dumpster finds here. :)

That article is HILARIOUS! New Yorkers are perfect for such a social experiment/ marketing ploy and I'm jealous of the fantastic find... that chair is great fun!

My mom had a serious knack for dumpster diving, and my dad would just accept her crazy ways. I love a good bargain, and have no problem with the previously-loved finds, but just hate the search. I check our Goodwill first most times, but then lose patience with hunting for that "just right" item and order online instead. *sigh*

You've just taken me back to my childhood--we had something very nearly like that in our den all the while! My mom must've dived (um, dove?) for it on some of her travels in the early 1960's.

No need to be proud, friend. Dive away!

I love those demijohns that can be found by the glass recycling! I have one in the house, but the rest are just collecting in our wood barn and waiting for a bigger home.
Thank you so much for your book recommendations Lucia, I was away and I wasn't able to write sooner.

Yeah, I totally pulled over to pick up a chair that I saw on the side of the road yesterday. It said "free" and I will likely sit in it at dinner tonight. Free finds are the best!

Hi Lucia, this "damajuana" (in Spanish) that you found is used to make wine. We have one like that at home and make home made wine every year for Passover. All it takes is grapes, sugar and lots of sun. Would you like the recipe I'd love to pass it on to you.
Enjoy your treasure in any way you choose to!!!!

I dumpster dive all the time too!
The other day at Lowes I took a bunch of flowers (that were perfectly fine) out of the trash can. Now they look beautiful :)
I'm turning in to my father!

I looks like a great find - I love dumpster diving although around here it's more curb diving as you see what the college students aren't able to move :0)
