TV Land

April 27, 2007

I have been struck by the revival of evening game shows on TV. I just saw an ad for a new game show, some sort of Bingo game. It makes me think that we will soon see a return to variety shows like Laugh In and Hee Haw. It seems like American Idol is the modern version of Star Search. I wonder what the modern version of Hee Haw will be like? Doesn't it seem like that's got to be next? Or maybe it is already out there and we just don't watch enough to know.

And still on the topic of TV. I have not had a chance to see my favorite radio show "This American Life" on tv. I have mixed feelings about it. We have loved the radio version for a long time. I have had a crush on Ira Glass since I first heard his voice. But I somehow just don't know if I want to see it on tv. Part of the allure of the radio version is similar to reading a book. You can create the images in your mind. You can put faces on characters. You get swept up by the mood of the music. If you haven't heard the show before, visit their website and listen to some of the older shows. Each week there is a theme. Sometimes funny, sometimes provacative, sometimes sad, but alway authentic and intimate. It always leaves us with something to talk about, something to think about. I wonder if the tv show will be able to accomplish the same thing. If you have seen the tv version, please give me your review!

I love This American Life (radio version), too. I get the Podcast and listen to it when I'm going for a walk or cleaning the kitchen. I haven't seen the TV show because we don't get Showtime. Let me know what you think if you end up watching it!

Hooray another This American Life lover! I do the same thing with the podcast. After writing this post I actually got on-line and watched the first episode (we don't get Showtime either). I am still a bigger fan of the radio version but perhaps that is because the two stories were ones I had heard on the air before. Maybe they will make other episodes available soon. Let me know your thoughts if you get to see any episodes.

We love "This American Life" too, though seldom get a chance to listen to it in Kidland. We saw Ira do a live show in N.O. a couple years ago, and he was disarmingly goofy and altogether charming. The New Yorker reviewed the TV show a couple weeks ago, and didn't totally pan it, but made it seem kind of redundant/nothing much added by seeing visuals. Let me know what you think if you see it!

lucia! you're a blog maniac! i haven't looked for a week or two and you've had a year's worth of adventures! i had no idea there was a TV show of any of this. we haven't seen a single show in at least 3 months...tv has totally left our lives, don't know how that happened but i think knitting has something to do with it. and i hope you're healing well with frozen food therapy- sounds like a classic! love all your pictures! happy birthday and anniversary...i can't believe you didn't say more about the new washing machine...which shows where my head is at- a new washing machine sounds like heaven...i've got true love...i NEED the washing machine.

We Love This American life...We listen to the new podcast every week after the kids are in bed! I am apprehensive about watching the show...Same reasons you stated and I don't want to interfere with my Ira Glass crush!
