We woke up to a very rainy day and suddenly our plans changed. Instead of experiencing our first Sicilian Carnivale parade we opted to stay home, lounge around in our pjs, exchange Valentines, eat lots of chocolate, and watch the Olympics. It turned out to be a very good day. Noah is especially fired up about the Olympics this year. He made his own little Olympic Lego athletes: on skis, on a luge, and on a bobsled. And when the rain stopped later in the day, he challenged Adam to some serious scooter racing (think speed skating but on scooters around a basketball court!). His excitement has us all a little more fired up than I expected. It is actually good timing as we prepare for a German ski trip in a few weeks. We are headed to Garmish-Partenkirchen where the 4th Winter Olympics were held in 1936. We keep telling Noah he will be learning to ski for the first time and he will NOT be doing any ski jumps, but I think he is secretly dreaming about it.
Have any advice for our first family ski trip?

That sounds like our day--until you actually got up and did something. We just got to the "pjs and chocolate" part.
Cami, only Adam and Noah took part in the scooter race. Camille and I stayed in our pjs and continued to lounge around the house :)
Glad you guys had a nice day, too!
waaay coool!!!
In our over abundance of snow this year, we braved the roads this weekend and went to Canaan Valley, WV where Russell III had his first downhill ski lesson and loved it. Good long underwear, a bib nylon outer layer, ski gloves, warm socks and dad's ski mask made him a happy camper. We also found this "ninja" style mask that keeps the head/face warm which was good. The next day we tried snowshoeing and x-country, but the weather turned and we had to call it a day. Emily is looking forward to her debut next year!
Enjoy your trip!
Ski Advice:
Teach the kids how to fall first... most important.
Than... be prepared for them to blow you out of the water at how quickly they learn.
What fun for you all!
You are going to love Garmisch! I have been there several times...let's e-mail and chat about it!
Karla, glad to hear about Russell's first ski experiences and thanks for the clothing tips. I am not looking forward to the cold. Do you have enough snow right do have your own backyard winter olympics?
Manny, I kept thinking about you guys last night with your Italian Olympic adventures.
Laureen, very funny and true...especially since I have only been skiing twice and both times I was in a kiddie class where they mad fun of me as they skiied past.
Kari, Yes! please send me any advice you might have including restaurants :)
Glad you had a fun rainy day! How fun to go on a family ski trip. I am sure your kids will be skiing in no time!
He might do some ski jumps, just little ones:) My boys started skiing at age 4, and for the first couple of years we put them in a class. The first thing they were taught was to flop down (skis on), and get back up again. I think what scares kids the most is not so much falling down (the kids slopes are just ever so slightly steep, and there's little chance of gaining much speed) but the helplessness and inability to get back up again, which does require a bit of balance and ability! Hope you enjoy your German trip. WIll you be skiing too?
I went to Garmish and learned to ski when I was Noah's age! It was soooooo much fun, I loved it. I did take a nose dive down a slope though and have a scar to prove it haha :)
No jumps Noah!
I hope you all have a great time!
I don't think you want my advice on skiing in Germany. But I'm thinking happy thoughts for you- Noah is old enough to love it and thrive and get really good, Camille is sure to enjoy it too and they have lots of breaks for hot cocoa for the younger set. Have a wonderful time and we'll be thinking of you, while our world is currently snow-covered.
I am excited to be your art pal! I really like your lego olympics guys. From, Ethan in Texas
