Headed Home

May 18, 2008

A very sad Sunday. My dad died this afternoon. Still too much for me to contemplate, too many raw feelings, and all I want to do is pick up the phone and call him. He is always the one I call when bad things happen. Headed back to Louisiana soon...home will feel so different without him there.

Oh Lucia, I am so sorry. I have no idea how hard this must be for you, since I haven't had to walk this road yet (and hopefully won't for a long long time). But my thoughts and prayers are going out to you and your family.

I did not want to see this post, and was honestly believing for him to recover.

I wish my words could express how sorry I am for the deep pain this brings and the horrible loss you must feel. You seem a much better writer than I, because your incredible words have painted a lovely image of your father over a number of posts. Highlighting his strength, intelligence, and amazing creative talents. My mother died 8 years ago to breast cancer at far too young an age. Regardless of age, it always seems too young, doesn't it?, when you say goodbye to someone you love.

Lucia, I've been holding my breath hoping this post would never come. You are so fortunate to have had such an inspiration in your life. And this is what you will be to your own children. My father died when I was 18. When I was 16 though he took a huge chance and changed his life from that of an Engineer to attend Culinary School and then open a B&B with my mother. Unfortunately he passed away only months before it opened. But, because of him I always think, "it is never too late to take a chance." And I always try everything on my plate! I never met your father, but your creative spirit shines so bright there must be a big part of him in you. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. -- K

My heart just dropped when I read this, hoping instead to read that he was getting better. I know I don't live right around the corner, but we are close and if you need anything please let me know.

Lucia,
We all know what a precious, delightful, intelligent, man Elmore was. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He loved his family and the beauty of the earth. He'll be missed, but you must always remember all of the wonderful times, quiet moments together, laughter with his grandchildren, his love for Mary and all of you. Our deepest sympathy. We loved him too. Diana, Larry and Jay
