Piece by Piece

National Building Museum, Washington, D.C.

Slowly, piece by piece we are building a little life here on the edge of D.C. Unpacking boxes and creating a home in a cozy, little house, building new friendships, re-newing old friendships, building walls against bullies (poor Noah started school this week and had some rough days),  piecing together new routines, and learning new routes (DC traffic isn't fun). Sorry for the significant lack of posts, but we have been busy patching it all together. It takes time and humor and friends and patience and lots of Legos.

Last week was all about Legos. An excellent Lego robotic camp for Noah, a visit to the National Building Museum with this very cool Lego exihibit, and lots of Lego pieces scattered on floors and tables and painfully underfoot. Legos are the perfect metaphor for our current stage of life...piecing it all together, brick by brick, in a colorful hodgepodge of old and new.

What's up with you these days?

This would have been right up my sons alley. He loves legos and robots! Sorry your son has had a rought start. It is sad that some children feel the need to make others feel horrible. We have been there and it is no fun!

So glad to see that you are getting settled. What MD suburb did you end up in? And please tell me about all the good food you have been having. Are all you relatives and friends managing through Issac?

The NBM is still on my list of Way Cool Places I Haven't Been Yet even though I'm right here in the Maryland 'burbs... I'm glad y'all got to spend some fun time there! I'm really sorry Noah is having that kind of "welcome" to school -- I remember (all too well) starting a new U.S. school after years overseas & not quite fitting in, please reassure him it does get better! And I think your Lego allegory is absolutely great!

I agree, beautiful allegory :) I'd love to touch base with you whenever you have time. I've got a few Lego lovers at home myself - that camp looks awesome!

I hope things continue to get better. Sorry for Noah. How awful for him. We keep saying we are going to go to DC for a family vacation. Things keep getting in the way though.

Good luck getting settled. I look forward to seeing DC, my old stomping ground, through your eyes!

Welcome back to the States! I'm sorry to hear about Noah's troubles...kids can be so hateful and hurtful to each other. It is my biggest fear in becoming a parent: raising a child who is able to stand up for himself and others with dignity and respect. It is my sincere wish that Noah get through this tough time quickly and with very little hurt (preferably none!).

I've been doing research about design education in museums and have come across these robot lego camps a few times - looks like such fun!

Hope Noah is getting on better at school now!
