Most of last week was spent unpacking our basement, running errands, and cursing under my breath. I grumbled my way through the traffic, waited impatiently for the slow moving cashier to do her job, got frustrated with the overly chatty shoppers in front of me,and snapped at my kids when I was late to pick them up at school. And then on Friday I got a much needed kick in the pants.
I spent the morning volunteering at the Walter Reed National Medical Center where all of my petty frustrations from the week disappeared in the face of true pain, loss, and heroism. Futures detoured, limbs gone, families reeling, walls covered with get-well wishes, and flags flying over a place where uncertainty and hope hover. A dramatic shift in perspective.
Most definately! My friend Lucy always says to me when I talk about a particular problem that what we consider problems to most people are blessings or First World problems. Have a great week!
aliThe time I spent there during our tour in Virginia is some of the best perspective I've ever had as a Navy Nurse. Caring for those (mostly) young men and talking with their families were some of the most humbling moments in my career. Glad you are also having the opportunity to care for them.
I work in a nursing home, and there isn't a week that doesn't go by without at least one day including something that reminds me most of my Big Problems are really little stuff compared to many very, very real possibilities. We all need a kick in the pants from time to time...
...and thank you for your efforts on behalf of our veterans and their families!
