One of the things I love best about Sicily is buying fresh fruit and vegetables from the trunks of cars parked haphazardly on the side of the road or dusty little trucks which seem to suddenly appear over night filled with peaches, melons, onions, and whatever else might be in season. I'll happily choose fruit from a trunk over the fancy, waxy stuff that gets showered by fake rainstorms and glows under florescent lights in big American superstores.

Absolutely with you on this one! We don't see as many trunk sellers up north, but even the stuff in the superstore is just good :)
You know it has to be fresh and not sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Yummy!
we get trucks in our region that have driven all the way from Sicily to sell us this wonderful produce.
yep backyard produce may not look as pretty as storbought but it definately tastes better!
It all looks delicious! While we were in NC we stopped almost daily at a little farm stand in someone"s driveway. They had the most delicious tomatoes I have tasted in a long time, beautiful sunflowers, and homemade pickles. All done on the honor system...so civilized! Now that we are home I really miss it!
YES! Knowing that you're probably talking to the person who picked the stuff makes it ever so much more edible. Plus, food should have flaws on it--I'm always suspicious of uniformly "untouched" nature.
I love "stands" like this, too. I'm the type of person who likes to pull of the road and buy fresh produce, too. :)
