At first it felt a bit novel and I enjoyed the \"challenge\" of trying to take interesting photos with my phone. Plus, it was just so darn convenient, small, and light weight. Around the same time, I also found myself shifting away from the blog and relying more upon Instagram for documenting\/telling stories\/and connecting with others. Eventually,I even stopped taking my camera on trips which felt both freeing and sad. For the first time in nearly fifteen years, I did not keep my camera with me at all times.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;trebuchet ms\u0026quot; , sans-serif;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;trebuchet ms\u0026quot; , sans-serif;\"\u003EAbout a month ago while cleaning out drawers in my bedroom, I came upon the 50 mm lens and something stirred. I dug out my camera and changed out the lens. Very quickly, I became frustrated, but I didn't switch back. Instead, I watched some youtube videos (how the heck did we learn anything before you tube existed?!) and kept playing around with the lens. Similar to when I first started using my phone camera, there was a little glimmer of excitement for this new challenge. I made myself keep the 50 mm lens on the camera and most importantly I kept my camera out. Things have gotten a little easier; not easy, not second nature, and not sure I will ever really love this lens, but I am enjoying the push to get better and the thrill that happens when a good shot emerges. With this little shift, I am also feeling eager to return to blogging a bit more. I miss the longer format and it has been fun to shake things up and create a new look for the blog. Camille was 4 or 5 at the time and it was a fun way to create spaces those characters who dominated her imagination and lived in books that had to be read again and again. Each year we pull out the village and Camille adds new elements...new literary neighbors, snow men, trees, etc. This year's new additions included an extra large house for the BFG and a clock tower for Hugo Cabret. Not only is it a lovely way to decorate during December and January, it is also a nostalgic and colorful trip down the lane of her favorite childhood books. It's not a huge place, but it's all hands-on and the perfect mix of maker space, science lab, and art studio. I am blown away by their enthusiasm and never would have dreamed that a\u0026nbsp; group of 11 year old boys would embrace this with such fervor. They are even spending their lunch periods creating lists of books to read in the next few months!\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;Trebuchet MS\u0026quot;,sans-serif;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;Trebuchet MS\u0026quot;,sans-serif;\"\u003ETheir first read was the super creepy, but incredibly captivating \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathanstroud.com\/lockwoodandco.html\"\u003EThe Screaming Staircase\u003C\/a\u003E by the beloved British author,\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathanstroud.com\/\"\u003E Jonathan Stroud\u003C\/a\u003E. I knew that Jonathan was coming to town as part of his American tour and suggested that it might be fun for the boys to read his book and then attend the signing.\u0026nbsp; On the afternoon of the author talk, the boys met at our house to discuss their thoughts on the book and prep a few questions. One of the most exciting parts of the afternoon was the discovery that one of the boys had e-mailed Jonathan the night before to express his admiration and within just a few hours he had gotten a very friendly response from Jonathan's publicist. The boys were all impressed with K's brilliant idea to contact the author AND the fact that he got an almost immediate reply. \u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;Trebuchet MS\u0026quot;,sans-serif;\"\u003EAfter a quick pizza dinner, we piled the boys into cars and headed over to the local library for the event. It took me while to park and by the time I got inside, I was thrilled to discover that the boys had seated themselves on the very front row and were engaged in a private chat with Jonathan. Having spent the afternoon with him for \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/anopenbookfound.org\/jonathan-stroud-at-hardy-middle-school\/\"\u003EAn Open Book school visit\u003C\/a\u003E, I already knew that Jonathan was a friendly guy, but to see him chatting in such a warm and genuine way with this little group of adoring fans really made me smile. The event was wonderful and the boys were giddy with excitement when it came time for the book signing. I am encouraging the boys listen to this on audio book for several  reasons: 1) Jon is reading it and really brings it to life, 2)\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.guyslisten.com\/\"\u003E audio books are an important way to read \u003C\/a\u003E, especially for boys  and 3) it will be perfect for Spring Break road trips....our family has listened to Knucklehead on several trips and we always end up howling with laughter. They spent all afternoon drawing, cutting, chatting, and customizing a whole cast of characters (a dog, a mouse, a monster), scenery (pizza restaurant), and props (pizza slices and ice cream cones).\u0026nbsp; Seriously, all afternoon, diligently working,planning the show, and rehearsing. I just wish I was better about labeling\/organizing\/keeping them. I have a friend who puts little discoveries from their trips into shadow boxes. They have a wall of boxes filled with rocks, shells, feathers, and coins from all over the world. It's wonderful and I envy it. We, on the other hand, have plates, jars, ziplocks bags, and camera cards filled with finds but never put into any permanent state of display. The norm around here seems to be to sign kids up for  multiple day camps. Don't get me wrong some of them are really  cool....lego robotics, nature camps, art camps....seriously, the choices are  overwhelming AND expensive. Not only were my kids not clamoring to sign  up for anything, I wasn't either. I love summers with the kids. I love  lazy mornings, spontaneous adventures, and piles of books. And I just  can't wrap my mind around having them in structured activities every day  or the chauffeuring that comes with that. We have some big things are  on the horizon for summer plans, but for right now we are staying pretty  close to home and doing our own little version of \"camp\"\u003C\/span\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-family: \u0026quot;Trebuchet MS\u0026quot;,sans-serif;\"\u003EIn  addition to fun outings like \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.wolftrap.org\/Find_Performances_and_Events\/Performance\/13TITW\/0627show13.aspx\"\u003EElizabeth Mitchell at Wolftrap\u003C\/a\u003E and  \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.butterflies.si.edu\/\"\u003Ebutterflies at the Natural History Museum\u003C\/a\u003E, we have also been having some  home-ec training sessions. Yesterday Noah learned how to make Ramen  noodle soup for himself. Today the kids worked together to make banana  bread. A few days ago we had a big class on proper bathroom cleaning  techniques and surprisingly they ate it up (we'll see how long that  enthusiasm lasts). Noah has assumed laundry duties and Camille has upped  her dish duty. I am relishing the extra help and happily there hasn't  been much whining. I didn't think it was quite warm enough to do the same, but it reminded me of winter dips in the ocean as a kid...we were just so eager to do it that a few goosebumps were easily ignored. Regardless of attire, the warm weather meant that we all spent as much time as we could outside and in the sun. Camille and her best friend who also happens to be our neighbor set up a \"picture store\".\u0026nbsp; They made three dollars selling their artwork, but what I really loved about the whole thing was their confidence and excitement. There were no qualms or doubts about proudly showing and selling their work. It seemed like a good thing to do, so they did it. Rainy, grey, cold and we will be spending most of it outside. Noah has his first big soccer tournament. The van is loaded with hand warmers, umbrellas, gloves, multiple changes of clothes, old towels and a mix of adrenaline, soccer mama pride, and dread. I wish we could have just a little bit of last weekend's warmth. But the dreary weather, doesn't seem to faze Noah a bit and he is fired up and ready. Camille on the other hand buckled into her seat and promptly started to intently study and evaluate each little paper valentines she had received from classmates. I sometimes get crabby and think all of these holidays with their over-emphasis on consumption and excessive sweets are just yucky and hollow, but listening to my kids giggle and compare silly cards in the back seat reminded me of how much I also enjoyed those class parties when I was a kid. In addition to being the holiday of love and chocolate, Valentine's Day also \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/bagelsandcrawfish.blogspot.com\/2006\/02\/gotcha-day.html\"\u003Emarks the anniversary\u003C\/a\u003E of when we became a family of four. It brings back memories of time in Taiwan, of holding Camille for the first time, of meeting her family,of our Taiwanese friends, and of participating in the Chinese New Year lantern festival. This year we quickly scribbled out hand made valentines for each other and dinner was not what I thought it would be. When I realized I was just too tired to make dinner we ended up going to a little Japanese place for sushi...all of us dressed in sweat pants and sneakers surrounded by couples in much nicer clothes. It was not our most presentable moment, but none of us cared. We were together. We were all healthy. I am undergoing evaluation for ovarian cancer. The only way to confirm or deny that scary-ass diagnosis is through surgery. My surgery will be at the end of January. In addition to doing acupuncture, yoga, walks with friends, I am also trying to occupy\/distract myself. It turns out that when you are faced with such a frightening possibility, you have a hard time ignoring it. In fact, it turns out that it is similar to buying a car. Suddenly, every other car on the road seems to be the model you are considering. I have been itching to make papier mache birds ever since bookmarking \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.thatartistwoman.org\/2010\/09\/paper-mache-birds.html\"\u003Ethis\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.artforsmallhands.com\/2010\/04\/papier-mache-birds.html\"\u003Ethis\u003C\/a\u003E several years ago. And I have to admit that it was such a surprisingly enjoyable process. The kids also had fun getting in on the action since this was a multi-day activity. One day for newspaper\/masking tape construction of the bodies. One day for the papier mache application (We used white paper towels and found that it was much easier and faster than working with newspaper. The paper towels also added an interesting texture to the birds). One day for painting the first coat for the bodies. And one final day for adding additional coats of paint (acrylic), details (sharpie marker), and wire feet. We all loved the quirky and colorful results. In fact, I kind of wish we had kept them all for ourselves, but that wouldn't have been in keeping with the Christmas spirit. It really is fabulous for all ages and it was one of my favorite Hanukkah gifts. We were swamped with a variety of unexpected health issues and the kids ended up spending most of the week at home. My long to-do list of errands quickly got tossed and our week morphed into a surprisingly pleasant blur of reading, crafting, and birding (watching the birds at our feeder and then making some of our own).
